LCD vs Plasma TV

What’s the difference between plasma and LCD TVs?

Whether to buy a plasma or an LCD television is a much-debated topic, so let’s take a look at the differences - and similarities - between these two competing technologies.

The first thing to realise is that both offer similar features. Both come in large size, flat screen formats and both give you bright, clear and colourful images for your viewing pleasure.

However, the science behind the two technologies is quite different. Plasma televisions work by sending electric pulses through hundreds of thousands of individual pixel cells to energise rare natural gases - xenon and neon for the scientifically-minded.

As the gases glow and produce light, this illuminates the correct balance of red, green, or blue phosphors contained in each cell to display the proper colour sequence.

With LCD screens, a matrix of thin-film transistors (TFTs) supplies voltage to liquid-crystal-filled cells, which are sandwiched between two sheets of glass. An electrical charge makes the crystals untwist to an exact degree to filter white light generated by a lamp behind the screen.

The latest development is a new form of that also uses LED technology. It uses a light emitting diode (LED) rather than a fluorescent as the backlight. LED light is generally brighter and easier to manipulate.

LCD technology has improved significantly but plasma screens still have an advantage when it comes to contrast. Plasma TVs are also superior when it comes to colour accuracy, although it depends upon the make and model of the television. LCD televisions tend toward oversaturation and a less realistic picture.

On this point it is also important to consider the level of light in the room where your TV will be. Plasma TVs offer richer and more natural colours in rooms with lower to normal lighting but LED LCD televisions can be more effective in very brightly lit rooms because of anti-glare technology.

Plasma TVs also have an advantage in viewing angles, offering a near perfect 180 degrees while the very best LCD HDTVs offer only around 120 degree viewing angles.

“I recently purchased from you a LCD TV for my living room which gets flooded with afternoon sun. Thank you for your recommendation, even with the sun glare the picture is much easier to view compared to Plasma we have in the bedroom.” 2nds World Customer
